The Fate of SkyNext

We’ve had a lot of emails and private messages on the forums about what the fate of SkyNext is going to be so I thought I’d clear up any misconceptions on whether we will be continuing the show or not. SkyNext is not ending anytime soon.

However, don’t expect it regularly either (did you ever?). With Terminator: Salvation now out, we’ve got two planned episodes for it coming, one this week and one probably the week after. Our AU hosts Jason and Robin did a recording for “Born to Run” with their thoughts which will be out in the month of June, as well as episodes for Terminator 1, 2, and 3 courtesy of Jason and the Flicks podcast that will be out late June.

As far as original SkyNext episodes, don’t expect much for a while other than our Salvation episodes, and at least one discussing the cancellation of The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Several people from the show have asked to be on to give their thoughts on the end of the series, and that will happen soon as well - two of which being Brian Austin Green again, and Writer / Executive Producer Ash Miller. Late in the summer we’ll start talking about the DVD release, and then (hopefully) we will be doing episode commentaries from the season two DVD in the SkyNext feed for you to sync up and watch. (Steve and I were actually asked to do commentary for an episode on the season two DVD, but it didn’t pan out - so we’re just using SkyNext to release it instead.) Unfortunately, with the release of the DVD - that will probably be the end of SkyNext sometime in mid-September. I’m not even promising we will get that far as we will undoubtedly lose subscribers by the masses in the coming months but I appreciate all of you who still want us to continue. It’s a dead subject however, and sad as it is to say, the series is not returning on FOX or anywhere else it looks like. I think the fan campaigns have been great but everyone has begun to move on and I think it’s time we did too.

In saying that, I wouldn’t expect more than 5-7 SkyNext (original) episodes left, with the 3 Flicks podcast ones. We’ll tell you more when we know more. As it stands, keep listening, we’re going to keep talking.

Hey Guys! Thanks for the update. I’ll let iTunes keep checking and checking and checking. Heck I still have podcasts that probably died two/three years ago still checking in iTunes. At least you’ll know that you’ll have one subscriber in your log files forever. Can’t wait to hear whatever you got for us.

I’m really relieved to know that we’ll be getting a few last episodes out of you guys! It honestly does help to offset the disappointment over the series being canceled.

Hey, any chance of getting an ep when the Terminator Salvation DVD comes out? I’m mostly asking because there’s a (probably very slim) chance that the Skynet Research video that some friends and I made will be included in the extras. :-)

Also, any chance we’ll see you guys at Dragon*Con again?

Thanks again, and always, for the fantastic, enjoyable podcast.

I’ll keep listening as long as you guys keep talking! Now that I’ve seen Salvation, I miss T:SCC more than ever. I kept waiting for Derek Reese to show up and take over in the film–I knew he wasn’t going to be a character in it, but I kept waiting for him anyway! Without T:SCC or Battlestar Galactica, I guess I have to end my brief stint of TV-watching and go back to my books.

Hey Derek, Hey Steve! I’m glad that you guys are still at it, but I was curious if you guys would be doing Terminator 5 and 6 when they come out, just curious, I know It’s a long ways away, but Still.

Whenever I know of someone who’s going to be picking up and enjoying the DVDs (which I’m sure in the years to come many people will still discover this awesome show that way), I’ll always be suggesting to them that they check out the Skynext podcast as well. Because it was and is a great way to extend the enjoyment of the show.

So thank you Derek and Steve and co for doing this awesome podcast :)

*Randomly comments for the first time* This sucks. *Hugs you guys* So so so much!

  7. Charlie Untz Says:

hey guys would you guys at least do us a favor? do a podcast giving us your thoughts on all 3 Terminator movies? at least let that be one thing you do before Skynext dies. Regardless, I am keeping you guys on my iTunes. You guys rock. Oh and FOX sucks!!!!

    Hi Derek and Steve

It is always a privilege to listen to your podcasts.
Could you consider continuing your podcasts please? They don’t have to be related to terminators.

People like YOU and they like to listen to what you say. People like your sense of humour too!!

Believe me - we want to listen to you ;)

    Cheers

I’ll miss you guys. I only started listening this year, and TSCC got cancelled before I could even get caught up-to-date with the show and podcasts. But you’ve added a touch of fun to watching the episodes.

So happy to hear that there are a few more episodes of the podcast on the way. You guys really did add something to the fan experience - it’s hard for me now to separate my feelings about the show and about SkyNext. They’re so intertwined in the “TSCC” area of my brain. Sad that things have to end, but happy that we haven’t heard the last from you. I love the commentary idea, BTW. That would have rocked on the DVD!

Thank you for all the time and effort you’ve put into these podcasts thus far. I plan to continue downloading and listening — and I’m especially interested to hear the thoughts of your guests, the writers/actors who made this show possible. The series finale left so many questions unanswered. If this really is the end of TSCC in all forms, I’d love to find out more from you guys and your guests about the direction in which the show was heading in Season 3 (and explanations of some of Season 2’s unaswered mysteries).

I can’t wait to hear some new Skynext podcasts!

  13. Bobbie Says:

Thank you Steve and Derek for a great podcast. I agree with some of the other comments - do a podcast for each of the new Terminator movie. I would enjoy listening to you two continue the podcast even if it were on something other than Terminator. You guys are a pleasure to listen to and have brought a little joy into my lunch time workouts. (I listen to the podcasts while I am at the gym.) I look forward to the few episodes left you have planned.

Thanks for taking your time to bring us this podcast.

    Hi Steve and Derek,
I found the podcast after season 1 and have listen to them at least twice since. I enjoyed listening to the podcast to work and school. Looking forward to the next few podcast.

Happy there are gonna be a couple more episodes! I’m gonna miss you guys. Good Luck in the future.

I have to say- I’m actually sadder about SkyNext going away than I am about TSCC.

So much of the fun of TSCC was speculation/discussion about the episodes, and you guys are talented podcasters. “Robot Lovin’ Act” “Ladies…” etc. I used to listen while working out, and it was great.

Now, here’s where we’ll diverge… Although I would obviously prefer TSCC to go on, I actually think it deserved to die. And that’s because of JF. I thought it was too self-indulgent- in the writing/story arcs. Basically, I think Josh gambled on getting a hardcore, Lost-like following. But it was an all-or-nothing bet- which he lost. Better to lower the stakes and have a third season.

The horrible story arc where Sarah was losing it was the epitome of this. I almost stopped watching. How are you going to get to syndication with opaque clunkers like those mixed in?

The way JF sniffed at “Terminator of the Week” syndrome was fine- if the goal is appealing to adoring sci-fi convention goers. But I would contend you need a more workman-like approach for the real-world. I’m not saying there needed to be an actual “Terminator of the Week” — I’m saying that it’s this attitude that ultimately killed TSCC.

The good news: I think TSCC will be a cautionary tale for the next team that tackles something like this.

  18. KimH Says:

One more- at the end of the 1st season, there were at least two things that I think should have been clear:

    1) The series had a lot of promise
    2) It wasn’t “Lost”

But they kept on writing as if the show were somehow going to turn into Lost. I think this was hubris, and I think it’s what killed TSCC.

  19. Captain Queeg Says:

As long as you guys keep doing the show, I’ll gurantee you’ll have at least one listener. Glad you’re hanging in there.

  20. Cody Says:

Hey you mentioned a radio drama sponsored by skynext ending the show. You may be joking in the podcast. But I thinks its a good idea
