The thing about the Terminator franchise is until it can be prevented passed the point of Connor being an acceptable leader, it is a self-sustaining sequence of events. As more and more machines come back, John is given more intel on when things happen in the future, when judgment day is coming, and who he is, etc. John knows his father is Kyle Reece and he’ll act that way. He knows he gave Kyle a picture of Sarah, so when the time comes he will give Kyle the picture of Sarah. He knows he sends Kyle back in time to protect Sarah, so he will. Regardless of what changes each time they change the future, so long as John is still accepted as leader of the resistance he will continue to “repair” the past by living up to events which he feels are inevitable.

Another thing though is that we can’t assume that Terminator is following the same rules as Back to the Future.

Yeah, that was one of the explanations on the BTTF bonus materials (that people that time travel are in an unaffected bubble). That makes sense b/c Marty is so confused when he gets back to 1985 in the first movie and why both of them are confused in the alternate 1985 timeline.

How about this? If the time bubble theory is in effect, then check this out. Kyle Reese traveled back to protect Sarah. He died doing this. Even though he is dead, the time bubble still is in effect for him an nothing he did in the past can be negated. I know, it’s a far stretch and has a lot of holes, but it’s fun to think of.

just an idea…

Buddy im not trying to have a go or anything, i definately see what you are saying and understand the logic behind it.

My thoughts are this, im going to try and explain the best i can, at the start of the film 1985, nothing has been changed, it is what it is. Once marty goes BTTF he changes the timeline, but he is displaced from the timeline,so effectively he belongs to a timeline that does not exist anymore.

At the end of BTTF part 1, the doc which has been shot is not from the same set of history as from the doc at the begiining of the movie. This doc knows hes gonna create the timemachine, get shot somehow in the process and meet marty mcfly for definate.

Now when the doc and Marty go BTTF together, they automatically change things just by being there, so the when marty speaks to doc in 1955 fir the second time at the end of BTTF2, he will no longer become the same doc that has been sent back to 1885.

Its kind of mind boggling, so what im saying is that through time travel, if your the one timetravelling you wont get an automatic timline update, but everything else will.

The confusion comes with the plotholes too, but i love the movie too much to delve into that.

So in conclusion lets use it on my take on kyle reece from the terminator, the one we see in the movie is from a diff timeline from the one in the the tv show, cos the movie one comes from where the war starts in 1997 and he grows up and is born during the war. Hes a different entity, this other kyle reece from the tv show, is not the same one hence doesnt have to go back in time as its been done already (hes not quite the same person), so i think we will see kyle reece in the show again in real time.

Thats my take on time for these movies anyways,

if we were to be logical then the prevention of 1997 war should of erased connor from history, but it didnt………

I think I didn’t come across the way I intended. Let me try again.

Marty went back in time and wrote the letter to doc that he would be shot and die. Doc read the letter and wore the bullet proof vest, thus saving his life.

Marty was in 1955 a second time when the DeLorean got struck by lightning right after Marty burnt the almanac. He went to the 1955 Doc Brown and let him know what happened. After finding out that Doc was shot in the Old West and killed, 1955 Doc helped Marty get the time machine and go back to the Old West.

Doc saves Marty from being hung by Mad Dog Tannen and asks who dressed up Marty in those silly clothes like he didn’t know why Marty was there.

Shouldn’t Doc have been able to stop the events of him being transported to the Old West since Marty told him about it in 1955? Actually that may have caused a paradox. Oh well, that was my line of thinking.

Especially like the way you have segmented everything, it makes relistening that much easier.

To Matt Andres, Doc dies when he is shot back in 1985, its only when he travels BTTF that he changes history and can warn the doc, so when he returns to the future the doc and follow events knowing he will succeed in the time machine, meet marty and dodge dying!!

Anyhow, I still like all 3 movies. The special features address these kind of questions and do a really good job of answering them.
